5% or more of the babies born in the United States have such tight tongue-ties and frenum pulls that they cannot successfully latch onto their mother’s nipple and breastfeed. For the baby, serious consequences include loss of weight and the label of “failure to thrive”. For the mother, this results in sore and cracked nipples, mastitis, painful engorgement and post-partum depression due to an inability to nurse her baby. The treatment of choice, is for a dentist to use laser technology to painlessly, bloodlessly remove the attachment, allowing the infant to immediately nurse.

In recent years, laser dentistry has superseded many traditional dentistry practices, making treatments more precise and less painful. This newer style of dentistry utilizes intense beams of light projected by dental laser.
Audience: Dental Hygienists, Dentists
AGD Code: 135
CE Credits: Lecture - 8.00; Participation - 5.00
Course Description:
In recent years, laser dentistry has superseded many traditional dentistry practices, making treatments more precise and less painful. This newer style of dentistry utilizes intense beams of light projected by a dental laser. New York City laser dentist, Dr. Convissar uses dental lasers to perform a wide variety of treatments, including soft tissue shaping and removal.
The FDA deemed laser dentistry to be safe for public usage in 1990 and approved the use of seven different wavelengths for dental use. These different wavelengths create a world of difference in how the lasers operate, and their usefulness in the oral cavity. Since then, many dentists including NYC laser specialist, Dr. Convissar, have incorporated dental lasers into everyday procedures – reducing bleeding, anxiety and post-treatment recovery times. The beauty of dental lasers is that they damage far less of the surrounding tissue than traditional techniques – which means less discomfort and pain. The use of lasers for specific procedures found in everyday general practice will be highlighted.
Here are some of the other benefits associated with laser dentistry:
• Faster healing and tissue regeneration.
• Preservation of more of the natural tooth.
• Reduced bleeding during and after treatment.
• Reduced need for anesthesia.
• Reduced need for stitches and sutures.
• Reduced risk of bacterial infections after procedures.
Educational Objectives: Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:
• List the various wavelengths used in dentistry today.
• Describe the effects of lasers on oral tissues and their uses for specific oral diseases and pathologies found in everyday practice.
• Determine the appropriate laser wavelength for their practice.
• Incorporate hard and soft tissue laser dentistry into their practices first thing Monday morning.
